GES, WAEC to be summoned over ‘poor’ WASSCE results

The Ghana Education Service and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) have been summoned to appear before Parliament’s Education Committee over the abysmal performance of students in the 2018 WASSCE.

The results released last week indicate that close to two hundred thousand students may not gain access to tertiary institutions in the country due to poor performance in the core subjects.

Speaking to Expo Room, Chairman of the Education Committee, Siaka Stevens, said the committee would be seeking answers aimed at improving WASSCE results.
“We want to meet WAEC and GES to explain to us the abysmal performances of students, why results have been withheld. We need statistics to be able to understand the current situation of students and understand their challenges,” he said.

The West African Senior School
Examination Council (WAEC) released provisional results of candidates who took part in the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Of the 316,999 candidates that sat for the exam, the full results of 26,434 candidates have been withheld pending investigations into various cases of examination malpractice.

“The withheld results of candidates will be canceled if found culpable, or released if otherwise,” WAEC said in a statement.

The Minister of State in charge of tertiary education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah has advised against WASSCE and BECE candidates who record grades below C6 in the examinations as having failed.

He was commenting on the WASSCE results in which more candidates scored below C6 in the Mathematics and English Language papers than in 2017.

According to the minister, such candidates should instead be guided to find other suitable areas of study for higher education.

Jeffery Okyere, a final year Senior High School student, was sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Accra District Court for impersonation during this year’s West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Also, Okyere, a student of ICODESH School in Accra, would pay a fine of GH¢4,200 and has been banned from writing WASSCE for three years.

Okyere’s accomplice James Kudjo, a 20-year old gardener and a Game Center Operator, was also sentenced to six months imprisonment and would also pay a fine of GH¢4,800 cedis.

WAEC Threatens To Cancel Entire Results Of Candidates Caught With Mobile Phones

West    African    Examination Council    (WAEC) has said any candidate that  comes into the examination hall with mobile phones or any other electronic gadgets will    have his or her entire results cancelled, as it begins  registration for second series of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)  for private candidates.
