A total of 517,332 final-year junior high school (JHS) students will write this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates from Monday, June, 2019. They comprise 263,616 males and 253,716 females. Last year, 509,824 candidates took the examination, meaning that there has been an increase of 7,508 candidates. The 2019 BECE candidates, who are from 16,871 public and private JHSs, will write the examination at 1,880 centres across the country. The examination, which will be written from June 10-14, 2019, will be manned by 1,880 supervisors and 18,136 invigilators. Statistics from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) made available to the Junior Graphic indicate that the Ashanti Region will, as usual, present the highest number of candidates of 104,461, made up of 52,945 males and 51,516 females. Exam Malpractice: WAEC bans cellular devices In an effort to help curb examination malpractice in the country, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has instituted some measures to nip the canker in the bud. The measures include banning the use of cellular devices at examination centres with immediate effect. Consequently, invigilators, supervisors and candidates will not be allowed to use mobile phones and other such gadgets during examinations. According to WAEC, the ban had become necessary after the results of a research which established that adults were primary culprits in examination malpractice at all levels of education in the country. In addition, it said, no supervisor or invigilator would be allowed, under any circumstance, to supervise or invigilate candidates from schools to which the supervisor or invigilator was affiliated. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has mounted a school selection portal to help candidates from the basic schools select secondary schools of their choice. A communiqué dated 4th June 2019, copied to all regional directors of education and sighted by the Ghana News Agency, indicated that, the school selection portal will also help prospective candidates make an easy entry into Senior High Schools (SHS) Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) and Technical institutes during the 2019/2020 academic year placements. The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), has criticized the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the cancellation of results of some 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. According to the coalition, the constant exam malpractices in the BECE will discredit certificates issued by the Council. “For us it is very unacceptable because it has implications on the certificate issued at the end of the day. If these things persist, the certificate will not be considered as credible and that will affect the opportunities that will be available for the children going forward.” The entire results of 83 candidates who wrote the 2018 BECE were cancelled. The West African Examinations Council, (WAEC), has released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). In a statement signed by Agnes Teye Cudjoe, Deputy Director, Public Affairs at WAEC, the council said it is in the process of dispatching the results to the schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Last Monday, WAEC asked the general public to disregard reports that it had officially released results of candidates who sat for the 2018 BECE. But after officially releasing the results, WAEC said it has “hosted the results online, and candidates who so desire may access their results at the Council’s website”.
